Barium sulfate, a white powder traditionally employed as a reference standard (Weidner and Hsia), could be a more affordable replacement for pricier white standards made from sintered PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene; Spectralon®, Labsphere, Inc., North Sutton, NH). While a 500 g bottle of BaSO4 is priced at $25, a reflectance standard crafted from Spectralon® boasting a 99% reflectance factor comes in at $385. Nevertheless, pure barium sulfate tends to dry into a powder that easily rubs off surfaces. To improve its durability, we experimented by blending it with untinted white latex paint. Reflectance and durability tests on varying BaSO4 and paint mixtures were conducted across a wavelength spectrum of 430 to 950 nm using an Apogee-StellarNet spectroradiometer.
