Benefits of Electric Diaphragm Pumps

Sometimes referred to as diaphragm pumps, double diaphragm pumps operate on positive displacement. With positive displacement, the pump moves fluid into a closed chamber. Once there is enough fluid in the chamber, the pump discharges the fluid as it reciprocates.

Double diaphragm pumps have two chambers, so as fluid is pushed out of the first chamber, it fills the second chamber. The process is then repeated with the fluid leaving the second chamber and filling the first. Diaphragm pumps can be pneumatic, hydraulic or electric, and each option has its advantages. However, as electric pump technology continues to advance, they offer many advantages over air or hydraulic pumps.

What is an electric diaphragm pump?

An electric diaphragm pump is a double diaphragm pump with an electric drive motor. The electric drive powers the pumping action instead of the compressed air used in pneumatic pumps or the fluid used in hydraulic pumps.

How do electric double diaphragm pumps work?

Electric diaphragm pumps usually have a cam and roller system built into the centre section that produces a linear back and forth motion. The centre section also has an inflation pressure (typically 10 psi higher than the fluid pressure at the pump outlet) that helps create this left/right motion. This forces fluid out of one chamber and into the outlet manifold while filling the other fluid chamber through the inlet manifold. When this transition occurs, the fluid filled on the previous shift partially empties into the outlet manifold and then fills the opposite chamber through the inlet manifold. The smooth transition greatly reduces pulsation at the pump outlet compared to pneumatic units.

Typical pressure ranges for electric diaphragm pumps are 60 minimum to 100 maximum psi.

Advantages of Electric Diaphragm Pumps

While air-operated diaphragm pumps remain popular in abrasive or corrosive fluids, electric diaphragm pumps are becoming increasingly popular. They offer many of the same benefits as air-operated pumps, plus a few additional advantages.

Self-priming: double diaphragm pumps are self-priming, which means they have fluid inside them, helping to minimise cavitation and improve operational efficiency.

Energy efficient: Electric diaphragm pumps are up to 80 per cent more energy efficient than air operated pumps, resulting in lower running costs.

Suitable for a wide range of materials: The design of double diaphragm pumps makes them ideal for use with viscous, corrosive or volatile fluids.

Due to their fluid pumping process, these pumps can also handle materials containing small solids.

Ability to stall under pressure: The diaphragm locks once the fluid pressure exceeds the inflation pressure at the centre of the pump. This helps prevent pump failure due to clogged lines or closed valves.

Quiet operation: The included motor means that electric diaphragm pumps run much quieter than pneumatic pumps, which can be noisy due to airflow.
