18 Best Bathrobes for Women | The Strategist

Sizes: XS&#;XL | Material: Turkish cotton (380 GSM)| Design: Cuffed wide sleeves, side pockets | Price: $

You can find more information on our web, so please take a look.

Brooklinen&#;s Super-Plush bathrobe is my recommendation for the best all-around bathrobe on the market. It&#;s everything I want a robe to be: comfortable, soft, and absorbent. Bragging about the robe has convinced at least two co-workers to get one for themselves, though it also makes a good gift, especially in limited-edition, seasonal colors like yellow and a striped green. The brand makes many of the Strategist&#;s favorite duvets, sheets, and towels, and the Super-Plush robe is another winner, inspired by the popular towels of the same name.

It&#;s a high-quality robe at a reasonably low price: A bargain at $99, it often goes on sale for up to 20 percent off. Though it doesn&#;t have the highest GSM on the list, at 380, I think it has a just-right thickness that&#;s coddling and not at all stifling. It&#;s exceptionally fluffy and absorbs water well: I can go straight from the shower to lotioning up and getting dressed without needing another towel. Even after almost four years of wearing and washing it, the robe barely shows any wear.

The only real drawback of the Super-Plush is that the robe only goes to a size XL, so if you need a larger size, you probably want to go for a similar style from Parachute, which I&#;ve featured below. I took my usual medium (a women&#;s size 6&#;8, according to Brooklinen&#;s size chart, which recommends sizing up if you want a more generous fit). It fits well, as I can tighten the waist tie as needed, and since I&#;m on the shorter side at about five-foot-two, it falls right above my ankles.

Sizes: XS&#;XL | Material: Organic cotton | Design: Shawl collar, front pockets | Price: $$$

At almost $200, Coyuchi&#;s Cloud Loom robe is an unquestionable splurge. But it feels wonderful wrapped around my body, and it&#;s one of the few bathrobes featured here that&#;s made from organic cotton &#; the same kind the brand uses in its best-selling bath towels, which are lauded for their absorbency and quick-drying power. Former Strategist senior writer Karen Iorio Adelson described the towels&#; thickness as somewhere between a regular towel and a superthin Turkish peshtemal. In testing the robe, I found it to be a little lighter in weight than the Super-Plush, and a bit more breathable as a result. It&#;s still just as absorbent &#; when I put it on right after showering, I dried off quickly. I also found it was a bit looser than the Super-Plush when I tried my usual size, if you like a more relaxed fit.

Sizes: XS/S&#;XL/XXL | Material: Organic Turkish cotton (380 GSM) | Design: Ribbing, wide sleeves, side-seam pockets | Price: $$$

Brooklinen&#;s Organic Ribbed Robe dries faster than the Super-Plush (even with the same GSM of 380). It&#;s made from Turkish cotton, which is famous for being quick-drying compared to other cottons. Through two months of wearing it almost every day after my shower, I&#;ve found it to be ridiculously absorbent &#; I&#;m dry within minutes &#; yet it barely feels damp when I hang it back up. You almost wouldn&#;t be able to tell that I&#;d worn it, if not for a little wetness at the back of the collar whenever I washed my hair. Although it&#;s not as soft and fluffy as the Super-Plush, the ribbed texture on the Ribbed Robe is just as pleasing on the skin. Strategist senior editor Jen Trolio, who has also tried both the Super-Plush and the Ribbed Robe, adds that the latter might be better for people who run warm, especially because it has shorter, wider sleeves that allow for more airflow. Another notable difference is the sizing &#; the Ribbed Robe is a lot looser, with combination sizing (XS/S, M/L, and XL/XXL) for a fit that&#;s not as close to the body.

Sizes: XS&#;3X | Material: Turkish cotton (450 GSM) | Design: Shawl collar, front pockets | Price: $$

Parachute&#;s Classic Turkish Cotton Robe is made from a thicker terrycloth than most of the other robes I&#;ve tried &#; the Turkish cotton has a GSM of 450, tied for the highest on the list. I&#;d say it&#;s even a little plusher than the Super-Plush, for about $30 more. It&#;s great when you get out of the shower and don&#;t want to feel even a hint of cold; I feel swaddled while wearing it. Yoga teacher Kate Posch agrees that the robe surrounds you in a feel-good haze, while Dande and the Lion co-founder Heather Pearson calls it the warmest robe she&#;s ever tried. Another bonus is a larger range of sizes than the Super-Plush, going up to 3X. One drawback is that I&#;ve noticed it sometimes comes out of the wash with loose threads, particularly on the waist tie, so I&#;d say it&#;s best to wash it with other linens or garments that won&#;t snag on the fabric.

Sizes: S&#;XL | Material: Cotton terry | Design: Piping, shawl collar, front pockets | Price: $$$

Luxury textiles label Frette was founded in the 19th century, and its high-end linens have been used at the Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, and Soho House. The company makes the kinds of classic plush robes that cost a pretty penny. But if you choose H by Frette, the brand&#;s diffusion line, you can get the same five-star-hotel feel for less. With luxe piping along the collar, waist tie, and sleeves and across the shoulders, this bathrobe is just as lush as you&#;d imagine, according to former Strategist associate editor Jenna Milliner-Waddell, who received it as a gift, but it doesn&#;t make her overheat like some others. &#;I mean, it&#;s Frette &#; so it&#;s hard not to feel like a rich bitch when you&#;ve got it on,&#; she says.

Sizes: 1&#;7 (equivalent to 1X to 7X) | Material: Cotton terry | Design: Looped lining, wrap collar, side pockets, hooded | Price: $$$

Arts marketer and Strategist reader Jeanna Vella emailed me to recommend Peridot Robes after browsing an earlier edition of this guide. Peridot is a self-described &#;fat-femme-owned label&#; that makes a variety of bathrobe styles in seven sizes, all of which are exclusively designed for people who wear a size 14 to a size 40. The robes are an investment, all at the $200 mark. But according to Vella, who owns three of the four robes the brand makes &#; the House Kush, Dolly, and Holiday &#; they feel worth it and high-end. &#;You can really tell they&#;ve put in the effort to get them just right,&#; she says, noting that the robes drape excellently along her curves. Vella reports that the brand&#;s sizing is fairly generous, and that she was able to size down to get the right fit: &#;I know a lot of us plus-size people are used to clothes running smaller than the size chart, but that&#;s not the case with Peridot.&#; Since the label&#;s stock is limited at the moment, I&#;ve featured the Hoodie Robe here, which has all sizes available (and you can sign up for back-in-stock notifications for the brand&#;s other styles). It&#;s made from a cotton-terry blend with an absorbent, towel-like lining.

Sizes: XS&#;3X | Material: Cotton terry (450 GSM) | Design: Contrasting-stripe colorway, shawl collar, patch front pockets | Price: $$

You&#;ve likely seen Dusen Dusen&#;s robe, which resembles an old-fashioned carnival tent, on the influencer set. It&#;s just fun, if you&#;re looking for something more bold. (Ever since I bought mine, I&#;ve seen bathrobe brands compete to get more colorful &#; Pleasing&#;s wavy version is a recent example.) I feel a little bit more cheerful whenever I reach for mine, and I like that rolling up the sleeves reveals a contrasting stripe pattern that matches the waist-tie rather than the rest of the body of the robe. The colorways are appealingly unexpected, pairing orange and green, or pink with blue. The robe feels just as thick and highly absorbent as Dusen Dusen&#;s bath towels (it&#;s made with 100 percent cotton terry, which has the same 450 GSM as the Parachute robe above) and doesn&#;t get too heavy when wet.

Sizes: S&#;XL | Material: Cotton terry (organic) | Design: Jaguar print (also available in a navy version), shawl collar, patch front pockets | Price: $$$

Those who find Dusen Dusen&#;s stripes to be a bit much might like the elegant, jaguar-emblazoned Towel Robe from Desmond & Dempsey instead. The pattern reminds me of what you would see on a high-end set of silk pajamas, but rendered on plush and absorbent cotton terry. (The brand often features felines as a motif of its leisurewear line.) The detailing on the jaguars &#; from the curling tails to the pointed fangs &#; makes it unique. I found that D&D&#;s robe is a bit warmer than Dusen Dusen&#;s, and I felt embraced while wearing it, but not smothered. In testing the robe since October, it has lasted well through multiple washes.

Sizes: One size (no size chart listed) | Material: Polyester | Design: Embroidered Soho House logo, hood | Price: $$

Soho Home&#;s House Robe is made by Frette at a lower price point. It&#;s made from a recycled polyester that&#;ll feel softer than a robe made from cotton terry, though with a similar shaggy look. This robe is the same one Soho House uses in its bedrooms and Cowshed spas &#; it even has the embroidered company logo. Leah Yari, co-founder of nail-polish brand Côte, first came across it at the Soho Farmhouse hotel in the U.K. &#;After a long day of travel, wrapping up in this fluffy cloud was my antidote to drizzly weather and jet lag,&#; Yari says. She describes it as &#;wonderfully snug.&#; (You can get it monogrammed for an additional $35, as well.)

Sizes: XS&#;XL | Material: Cotton terry | Design: Piping (customizable), front pockets | Price: $$$

Matouk has been mentioned repeatedly when we&#;ve asked around about luxe linens. And while the Cairo Robe is the most expensive bathrobe on this list, it&#;s a worthwhile investment quality-wise. Greer Simpkins, designer of lingerie label Hello Beautiful, says that while most of her robes are secondhand, the Cairo was worth the splurge for the craftsmanship. It&#;s manufactured in Fall River, Massachusetts, and the long-staple cotton terry is made in Portugal. (&#;Long-staple&#; refers to the length of the fibers, with longer meaning stronger.) The fabric feels &#;truly lavish,&#; she says, which also helps justify the price tag. You can choose between several colors of piping, and the robe can be monogrammed for an extra $21 &#; there are 20 different monogram styles and more than three dozen thread colors, as well as the option to have your monogram on the front or back of the robe.

Size: One size (that fits up to a size 16, according to the brand) | Material: Cotton | Design: Striped design, front pockets | Price: $$

If a classic bathrobe is a tad subdued for your taste, take a cue from Charlotte Palermino, co-founder of Nice Paper, who favors this colorful Bathen robe. &#;The stripes make me feel like I&#;m about to walk out onto my private veranda somewhere on the Riviera &#; not stress-listening to the news while I do my skin-care routine,&#; she says. The cotton is fast-drying &#; another draw for Palermino. &#;Most bathrobes are too heavy or feel like damp housecoats when I&#;m done with them,&#; she says. Instead of the traditional terry cloth, Bathen&#;s robe is made from a cotton that isn&#;t looped, feeling lighter by comparison. It&#;s soft but never feels flimsy. I&#;d describe the robe as airy and billowy, draping right along my curves. I&#;ll put it on while getting ready, when I&#;m not entirely dry but not dripping wet either. It&#;s best washed in cold water on a delicate cycle and hung to dry to prevent wrinkles. And a fun fact: Singer Rita Ora wore this robe on her wedding day.

(Another colorful robe that earned high praise is Block Shop&#;s Sidewinder Robe, which publicist Linlee Allen-Homs introduced me to. &#;I might not resemble David Hockney&#;s Beverly Hills Housewife,&#; she says, &#;but when I&#;m wearing this robe, standing in my garden, morning coffee in hand, I surely feel like one.&#; (It comes in petite plus sizes as well, which is a rarity.)

Sizes: XS&#;XL | Material: Cotton, rayon, polyester | Design: Striped pattern, shawl collar, side pockets | Price: $

Strategist senior editor Hilary Reid couldn&#;t get this bathrobe out of her head after seeing it on the second floor of Zitomer. She ended up ordering the robe online, and she has been impressed with its quality in the two months since it arrived. The outside of the robe soaks up water easily while not getting soggy, and the inside feels almost velvety on. &#;It&#;s actually pretty luxurious,&#; she says. Because it&#;s a short bathrobe &#; the hem hits right around mid-thigh &#; you won&#;t feel overheated right after a hot shower. But it&#;s warm enough to wear over pajamas, as Reid sometimes does. (Just note that it runs a little on the small side, so you might want to order one size up.)

Sizes: XXS&#;XXL | Material: Pima cotton | Design: Cross-back straps, wraparound, Velcro tabs | Price: $

Lake is a favorite pajama brand among Strategist staffers, with writers Dominique Pariso and Liza Corsillo as on-the-record fans. This bath wrap is made from the same supersoft Pima cotton Lake uses in those pajamas, and though I worried it would immediately get soggy with shower water, instead I felt like it gently patted me dry. Still, it&#;s not the robe I&#;d reach for first when I&#;m dripping &#; I think it&#;s best for post-post shower, when you&#;re getting ready and your skin is still slightly damp. The wrap is leagues better than just wrapping a towel around my torso; the Velcro tabs stay securely closed, so I don&#;t ever feel like it might fall off (I have accidentally caught the ends of my hair on the tabs while in a rush, though).

Sizes: XS&#;L | Material: Turkish cotton (waffle weave) | Design: Front pockets, folded collar | Price: $

I considered the waffle robes from Parachute (which Girls&#; Night In founder Alisha Ramos, likes for its &#;spa-like vibes&#;) and Brooklinen (a favorite of waffle-weave aficionado Carrie Carrollo, a digital creator). But ultimately, the $50 price point of Quince&#;s very respectable waffle-weave robe was too irresistible. If you&#;re unfamiliar with the company, it&#;s similar to Everlane in ethos: producing high-quality items with more pricing transparency and no middlemen. I tried this version myself &#; and it was the robe I reached for most throughout this past summer. I&#;d compare the robe to Bathen&#;s above in its weight and texture: lighter, gauzier. The robe&#;s thinness means it&#;s not the one for you if you tend to shiver after a shower. But when it&#;s hot, the Turkish Waffle Robe really is the closest thing to wearing nothing at all when you&#;re drying off.

Sizes: XS&#;XXL | Material: Cotton and viscose | Design: Cuffable wide sleeves, shawl collar, front pockets | Price: $$$

For the longest time, Strategist writer Rachael Griffiths was between bathrobes, having thrown out an old fleece one and put off finding a replacement. Then Cozy Earth offered to send this bathrobe, and &#;it&#;s materially changed my life for the better,&#; Griffiths says. The entirety of her beauty routine is done in it &#; every skin-care step and hair drying &#; and she adds, &#;with my bathrobe on and a roller in my bangs I feel in my natural habitat.&#; (She even went for the charcoal color out of an abundance of caution: &#;I fake tan and dye my hair red, so the white wouldn&#;t have stood a chance.&#;) While Griffiths always pats dry with a towel after a shower to avoid the sensory overload of wet-arm-in-sleeve, she has sometimes thrown the bathrobe straight on and it doesn&#;t feel overwhelming. It has a plush thickness that makes her feel as though she&#;s checked into a fancy spa while laying in bed. &#;It&#;s the spa-quality robe I&#;ve always yearned for,&#; she says.

(If you can swing more of a splurge, Onsen makes another wonderful waffle-weave robe. It dries me off quickly, and the hood acts as a hair towel whenever I don&#;t want to wrap the top of my head in one.)

Sizes: S/M&#;4XL | Material: Polyester fleece | Design: Embroidered logo on chest | Price: $

The Madonna Inn is named after construction magnate Alex Madonna, not that Madonna. Famous for its all-pink aesthetic, the motel loans cotton-candy-colored robes to guests &#; and Strategist writer Katherine Gillespie became obsessed with hers during a stay there. The fleece is made from a fluffy polyester. (If you want a robe that&#;s more breathable, made from natural fibers, one like Brooklinen&#;s Super-Plush is a better bet.) The fabric has maintained its soft-to-the-touch feel with a high-enough pile &#;that you can put the robe on straight out of the shower and dry off fairly instantly,&#; Gillespie says. But absorbency aside, it&#;s also something &#;grand and glamorous&#; to wear while swanning around her apartment &#; Gillespie feels like Jayne Mansfield in her &#;pink palace&#; whenever she has the robe on. It&#;s a hotel bathrobe from an actual hotel, after all: &#;Hotel-branded robes are a huge move in general, and this one is perhaps the silliest and least sexy one available &#; but a lot of fun.&#;

Sizes: S&#;XXXL (men&#;s) | Material: Cotton flannel | Design: Yarn-dyed tartan, chest pocket, front pockets | Price: $

If warmth is what you want, you can&#;t go wrong with flannel. This flannel robe from L.L.Bean men&#;s department is made from a longer-staple cotton that&#;s checked by a master weaver to make sure it&#;s soft enough (according to the brand). Because it&#;s made from natural fibers, it won&#;t keep moisture in as synthetic fibers do, explains Nico Lazaro, editorial manager for Buck Mason, in our guide to the best men&#;s bathrobes. Lazaro grew up wearing the robe. It&#;s also a favorite of New England dads, including Strategist senior writer Liza Corsillo&#;s &#; he&#;s had one since the s. Dancer Eva Alt borrows it from her boyfriend because it&#;s &#;insanely warm.&#; It&#;ll be generous in sizing in the men&#;s version, while the women&#;s version comes in petite, regular, and plus sizes for those wanting a robe that&#;s more closer-fitting.

A super-soft unisex robe: Restoration Hardware Luxury Plush Long Robe

Best for

This exceedingly sumptuous unisex robe is warm, comfortable, and softer than any other robe we&#;ve tested. It&#;s not the cheapest poly-plush option out there, but it lasts for years and years.

Buying Options

The Restoration Hardware Luxury Plush Long Robe is the softest, most decadent robe we&#;ve tested: It&#;s a real treat. On a slow morning, it brings a touch of luxury; on a sick day, a dose of comfort. If you&#;re buying this for someone as a gift&#;or you want your own robe to feel extra special&#;it can be monogrammed for around $15.

It&#;s ridiculously soft and cozy. This robe&#;s thick, poly-plush material&#;the softest we tested&#;feels sumptuous. (It was the only thing that soothed one tester&#;s prickly skin through the flu.) It&#;s also plenty warm: Only our L.L.Bean Women&#;s Winter Fleece Robe pick is more insulating.

It&#;s extra long. The nearly ankle-grazing Luxury Plush is the longest robe we recommend. It has a shawl collar and generous sleeves, which most of our testers needed to roll up. There are two ample patch pockets on the front and an exterior belt that keeps the robe securely closed.

It stands the test of time. The Luxury Plush robe is on the spendier side, but we think it&#;s well worth the price. One tester has owned a version of this robe for 15 years and counting; through a pregnancy, sick days, and countless launderings, it&#;s still kept its touchable softness and upscale appearance. (The older model has pinned-back cuffs, while the current version leaves the sleeves long and loose; otherwise, the robe remains substantially unchanged.)

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The length (especially the sleeves) may be too generous for some.

Specs

  • Sizes: unisex XS to XL
  • Material: 100% polyester
  • Colors: four solid colors

A cozy, quilted unisex robe: Skin Sierra Robe

Best for

This cuddly (and chic!) quilted robe is made from ultra-soft cotton with a cozy poly fill, so it feels like wearing your favorite blanket. If you plan to put it in the dryer, we recommend sizing up, since it will shrink.

There&#;s nothing quite like wrapping up in a cozy blanket&#;alas, wearing your duvet around the house is pretty impractical. Enter: the Skin Sierra Robe. This quilted-cotton robe has a light and squishy filling that envelops you in cloudlike comfort without compromising the functionality of a regular robe. And unlike other comforter-style robes we&#;ve tried, it&#;s actually stylish and flattering.

It feels like bedding. This robe is essentially a (very attractive) wearable comforter. Its quilted cotton-jersey exterior is touchably soft&#;like a well-loved T-shirt&#;while the light polyester padding provides cuddly warmth without too much bulk.

It has a chic, minimal style. Many blanket-style robes have a puffy, Michelin Man silhouette, but the Sierra Robe looks sleek and streamlined. Depending on your height, it hits from the mid-calf to the ankle; it has a wide shawl collar and a waist tie that cinches tidily (though this robe looks wonderfully nonchalant when worn open). Two in-seam side pockets are perfectly placed for hands, and there&#;s an additional patch pocket in front where you can stow a or remote.

The sleeves arrive cuffed, sewn into position; one 6-foot-tall tester (wearing a size 1) found them too short. &#;I removed the stitches&#;it was super easy and didn&#;t leave any marks,&#; she said.

It&#;s worth the splurge. If the idea of a blanket-style robe appeals to you, this one (while admittedly pricey) won&#;t disappoint: It&#;s well constructed, and it delivers a delightful blend of softness, warmth, wearability, and pampering comfort.

It&#;ll shrink in the dryer. Skin recommends flat-drying the Sierra Robe; we tried that, and it was a pain. (Because of its padding, the robe absorbs a lot of water in the wash&#;it&#;s heavy when wet and takes an eternity to dry.) We switched to tumble-drying, and our test robes are still in beautiful shape, but they did shrink by a couple of inches in length, as well as in the width of the arms. If you plan to put this robe in the dryer, size up accordingly.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • The permanently cuffed sleeves aren&#;t adjustable (unless you remove the stitching yourself).
  • If you put this robe in the dryer&#;and it would be lunacy not to&#;it will shrink.
  • While this is a unisex robe, it&#;s offered only in sizes up to a men&#;s L.

Specs

  • Sizes: 0 to 5 (equivalent to women&#;s XS to XXL and men&#;s S to L)
  • Material: shell: 100% cotton; fill: 100% polyester
  • Colors: five solid colors (gray, black, white, navy, light pink)

A terrific women&#;s and men&#;s terry-cloth robe: The Company Store Company Cotton Long Robe

Best for

This soft, luxurious cotton-terry robe is comfy for lounging, easy to move around in, and absorbent enough to dry you off after a shower. But the thick material is a tad too warm for year-round wear.

This soft, luxurious cotton-terry robe is comfy for lounging, easy to move around in, and absorbent enough to dry you off after a shower. But the thick material is a tad too warm for year-round wear.

The Company Store&#;s Company Cotton Long Robe, in women&#;s and men&#;s sizes, is everything a terry-cloth robe should be (but precious few actually are): indulgently soft, easy to move in, and wonderfully absorbent for drying off post-shower.

It&#;s classic and luxe. With its relaxed shawl collar, generous patch pockets, and tie belt, this is the platonic ideal of a traditional terry robe. The fit is roomy and inviting through the body, ending around mid-calf; the women&#;s robe (only) also comes in a shorter, knee-length version.

Made from long-staple Turkish cotton that&#;s combed for extra softness, the terry material is thick, springy, and plush. (We&#;ve tried lesser terry robes that felt thin, rough, and scratchy.) For $12, you can add a monogram&#;a nice touch, especially for gifting.

It&#;s a great post-shower robe. The Company Cotton robe is essentially a wearable towel; it absorbs plenty of moisture without turning clingy, and it dries quickly. Pattering around the house in it is a pleasure, too: It moves fluidly and drapes well. We could brush our teeth, work at a computer, or make a cup of tea without feeling restricted.

It has a versatile weight. When temperatures dip, the Company Cotton robe is thick enough to keep you toasty. It feels just right for lounging indoors in mild-to-chilly climes (though it&#;s not as cozy as our cold-weather picks from L.L.Bean, Restoration Hardware, or Skin.) But we found it a little too warm in the hotter months, especially for wearing right after a steamy shower.

It&#;s built to last. After a year and half of regular use and laundering, our Company Cotton robe is holding up well, with no pulls, snags, or pilling. The terry loops feel less plush and lofty than they did when new, but they remain just as absorbent.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The terry loses some of its plushness after heavy use (though this is to be expected).

Specs

  • Sizes: women&#;s XS to XXL (also available in a shorter version, women&#;s XS to XXL); men&#;s S to XXL
  • Material: 100% cotton
  • Colors: eight solid colors in women&#;s; four solid colors in men&#;s

The warmest women&#;s fleece robe: L.L.Bean Women&#;s Winter Fleece Robe

Best for

This incredibly warm and practical women&#;s fleece robe is ideal for chilly temps&#;just be aware that the fabric does tend to attract some lint (and static). It comes in more extended sizes than any other robe we tested, including petite and plus sizes.

To brave the coldest days, we reach for the long and cozy women&#;s L.L.Bean Winter Fleece Robe. It&#;s reliable, solid, and reassuring, in both form and function. As one Wirecutter staffer put it, &#;It&#;s not the coolest robe, but it is the warmest&#;which is all I care about on mornings before my radiator really gets cranking.&#;

It&#;s the warmest robe we recommend. Made from thick, soft fleece, this robe is a toasty treat. Its generous length and wide shawl collar provide heavy-duty insulation, even on jaunts to the mailbox in the snow.

Plus, it&#;s a pleasure to lounge in. In addition to the long exterior belt, this robe has inside ties to keep it securely closed, and the pockets are just the right size for a and your hands. And while it&#;s supremely warm, its polyester material didn&#;t make us sweat, which can happen with synthetic fabrics. (Note: The fabric does attract lint and produce static; Wirecutter laundry expert Andrea Barnes says wool dryer balls can reduce static cling.)

The fit is long and roomy, and it comes in lots of sizes. The Winter Fleece Robe is available in women&#;s regular and petite sizes XS to XL, and plus sizes up to 3X. There&#;s plenty of material to wrap around yourself, and the fabric flows rather than clings.

It holds up. This is pricier than many fleece robes, but it sets the gold standard for quality; it&#;s also backed by L.L.Bean&#;s one-year satisfaction guarantee. Multiple testers have had their Winter Fleece robes for close to a decade; though the robe does pill a little over time, it retains its color and remains otherwise intact.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Fleece attracts lint and produces static, especially straight out of the dryer.
  • It&#;s more utilitarian than stylish, and the color options don&#;t help. (We think navy is the best-looking choice.)

Specs

  • Sizes: women&#;s petite XS to XL; regular XS to XL; plus 1X to 3X
  • Material: 100% polyester
  • Colors: five solid colors

A chic, spa-style unisex waffle robe: Brooklinen Dreamweave Waffle Robe

Best for

This lightweight, roomy waffle robe is soft, absorbent, and quick-drying. We love its relaxed cut, but the sleeves are extra long and may need to be cuffed.

Buying Options

Wrapping up in the Brooklinen Dreamweave Waffle Robe is the closest we&#;ve come to spa-day-at-home vibes. With its easy cut and airy cotton fabric&#;which is simultaneously cushy yet nearly weightless&#;this unisex robe invites relaxation. It&#;s absorbent and breathable, making it ideal for drying off and lounging in warmer conditions.

It&#;s light and springy. This robe&#;s soft Turkish cotton has a spongy, honeycombed texture; it&#;s light and surprisingly resilient. While some waffle robes feel thin and flimsy&#;and tend to snag or shrink in the laundry&#;the Dreamweave Waffle has held up like a champ.

It doesn&#;t get waterlogged. The Dreamweave Waffle Robe rivals a terry robe in absorbency; you can use it to help towel off post-showering. Its cushiony squares pull moisture from skin and dry quickly, so the robe feels luxuriously enveloping&#;not soggy&#;even in humidity.

The fit is generous&#;and the sleeves run long. This knee-length robe has an easy unisex cut with a flat kimono-style collar, large in-line side pockets, and a tie that stays closed. It fit comfortably on both our male and female testers. Most testers opted to cuff the longer-than-average sleeves; if you&#;re petite, their length might be overwhelming.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The long sleeves may be too generous for some.

A stylish and lightweight women&#;s jersey robe: Natori Shangri-La Robe

Best for

This lightweight jersey-knit robe feels soft and slinky&#;and its ¾-length sleeves don&#;t get in the way. The curve-skimming cut is flattering on different body types, though the material is a little clingy.

The Natori Shangri-La Robe&#;made from a modal/polyester jersey knit&#;feels cool and soft on the skin, like an expensive T-shirt. It&#;s become a Wirecutter staff favorite: Our editors rave about its good looks, buttery material, and enduring quality. What&#;s more, this flattering robe is available in a wide range of women&#;s sizes.

It looks effortlessly put together. This robe isn&#;t merely outrageously soft and comfortable&#;it&#;s cute, too. &#;You&#;re just making coffee and getting ready but also happen to look chic,&#; one tester said.

At least four Wirecutter staffers have owned the Shangri-La Robe for a year or more, and they all rave about its style and longevity. &#;It&#;s by far the nicest robe I&#;ve ever owned,&#; a senior editor said. &#;The fabric feels expensive.&#;

The fit is slinky and flattering. Testers of many different body types praised the fit of this ankle-grazing robe, which comes in sizes XS to 3X. It has a kimono-style wrap front, in-seam pockets that don&#;t pucker at the hips, and an inside tie to keep it closed.

While generously proportioned, it won&#;t swallow you up&#;the drapey, body-skimming jersey material hugs curves. (Some testers found it clingier than they&#;d like.)

It makes an excellent dressing gown. The Shangri-La Robe is especially easy-breezy to wear as you&#;re getting ready for the day or performing your bedtime routine. Its flat kimono-style collar doesn&#;t interfere with hairstyling, and the ¾-length sleeves stay out of the way as you wash your face.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Jersey fabric clings to the body and may be too form-fitting for some.
  • This robe shrank about 4% in the wash, though it didn&#;t affect the wrap coverage or generous fit.

Specs

  • Sizes: women&#;s XS to 3X
  • Material: 65% modal, 35% polyester
  • Colors: six solid colors (depending on the retailer)

A glamorous and giftable silk robe in women&#;s and men&#;s styles : Petite Plume Silk Long Robe

Best for

Made from deliciously slippery mulberry silk, this decadent, richly patterned robe sparks delight. It won&#;t be the most practical item in anyone&#;s wardrobe&#;but it just might be the favorite.

Buying Options

Made from deliciously slippery mulberry silk, this decadent, richly patterned robe sparks delight. It won&#;t be the most practical item in anyone&#;s wardrobe&#;but it just might be the favorite.

Buying Options

The Petite Plume Silk Long Robe&#;available in women&#;s and men&#;s styles&#;makes an entrance. Made from gleaming silk that&#;s been artfully tailored, it comes in a range of captivating patterns; it&#;s the kind of robe that you could imagine on a particularly glamorous dinner-party host. It&#;s also a sure-to-delight gift: I audibly gasped upon receiving my (beautifully boxed) package.

It oozes Old Hollywood glamour. This robe has a long, sophisticated silhouette and throwback styling (think: piping around the collar, cuffs, and pockets).

The women&#;s version is nearly ankle length, with snazzy notched lapels. The men&#;s version is mid-calf length and has a more understated shawl collar. (But the labeling needn&#;t dictate which robe you choose&#;Wirecutter senior style editor Jennifer Hunter preferred the simpler styling and more generous cut of the men&#;s robe.)

It comes in irresistible patterns. This is a case of the pattern making the robe. We were especially taken with the luxe panther prints (available in men&#;s and women&#;s cuts, in striking emerald and midnight blue), but the Petite Plume robe also comes in elegant polka dots (women&#;s), bold stripes (men&#;s, women&#;s), flamboyant florals (women&#;s), and limited-edition prints (women&#;s). Simple solids (men&#;s, women&#;s) are available too, but we consider that a wasted opportunity.

The silk is sleek and glossy. This robe is made from machine-washable 22mm mulberry silk, a medium-weight silk with an ultra-smooth weave and a satiny finish. Compared to our other silk-robe pick from Eberjey, this robe is shinier, more wrinkle-resistant, and much more slippery&#;your hand glides across its surface with virtually no resistance.

While undoubtedly satisfying, its slipperiness verges on the silly: The belt snakes out of the belt loops, and the long sleeves won&#;t stay rolled. But practicality was never this robe&#;s calling card.

It&#;s seriously gift-worthy. If you want to spoil someone special&#;and it&#;s in the budget&#;look no further. Wirecutter supervising style editor Ingela Ratledge Amundson gifted the panther print to her mom, who responded giddily (and fired off some photos of herself wearing it along with the caption: &#;Am feeling very luxurious&#;). We highly recommend splurging for the $10 gift wrapping; the robe will arrive in a lovely (reusable) ribboned box. Opening it feels like an event.

Note: Sizing on both the men&#;s and women&#;s robes runs slightly small; if you&#;re unsure, order a size up.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • It&#;s pricey.
  • The notable slipperiness of the material has consequences (like the belt sliding out of the loops).
  • We noticed a few loose threads. But when pulled, they didn&#;t cause any unraveling, and every seam has held up through multiple wash cycles.
  • We wish this robe came in more extended sizes.

Specs

A luxurious women&#;s silk robe with an elevated cut: Eberjey Inez Washable Silk Robe

Best for

This pricey kimono-style robe is a worthy indulgence. Made from velvety-smooth mulberry silk, it has a stylish, considered cut and an elevated feel&#;but it lacks pockets.

Buying Options

Silk robes can cost a pretty penny. Many don&#;t justify their lofty price tags, but we&#;d be happy to splurge on the women&#;s Eberjey Inez Washable Silk Robe. It&#;s both elegant and elevated: The silk is luxe and velvety, the cut is flattering and très chic, and the details are beautifully executed.

It has a spot-on cut with fetching side slits. The Inez robe is sophisticated and flattering, with relaxed dropped shoulders, a flat kimono collar, and dramatic kimono-style sleeves that hit just above the wrist. It has a waist-cinching belt closure, with an inner tie to keep the robe from falling open. (But no pockets.) Best of all, the mid-calf-length silhouette is punctuated with deep slits on either side, offering a glimpse of leg that&#;s visually elongating and tastefully risqué.

It&#;s velvety soft. The Inez robe&#;s lightweight 16mm mulberry silk feels heavenly. The texture is smooth, supple, and just slightly matte, in the best possible way; some lesser silk robes that we tested had an off-putting, almost-powdery finish. &#;Of all the silk robes I&#;ve tried, this one feels the most expensive,&#; remarked one panelist.

It&#;s surprisingly practical. A nearly $300 silk robe doesn&#;t exactly scream &#;functional.&#; And yet, the Inez robe has proven itself to be a utility player.

This robe is machine-washable (gentle cycle) and air-dries quickly. Our testers&#; robes have held up beautifully through multiple launderings. It&#;s not nearly as wrinkle-prone as some silk robes, and any wrinkles that we encountered could be steamed out quickly.

Like our Natori Shangri-La pick, the Inez robe is particularly well suited as a dressing gown, with shorter sleeves that stay out of the way and a flat collar that doesn&#;t impede hairstyling efforts. The unfussy mid-calf length and deep side slits&#;aside from looking great&#;afford excellent mobility and range of motion.

One less-practical detail: This is the only robe we tested that lacks pockets.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • This is the most expensive robe we recommend.
  • It doesn&#;t have any pockets.
  • The only color options are black and ivory. (The shorter mid-thigh version is available in poppier colors, plus one gorgeous print).

A breathable unisex linen robe: Rough Linen St. Barts Linen Robe

Best for

If you want a robe that&#;s breathable and helps keep you cool, linen is your best bet. This is the lightest and softest linen robe we&#;ve found, but it may still be too nubby&#;and wrinkle-prone&#;for some tastes.

Buying Options

In theory, we love a crisp, cool linen robe. In reality, linen can be scratchy and stiff. But the unisex Rough Linen St. Barts Linen Robe won us over with its unusually soft, lightweight fabric and easy, flattering drape. It has a luxurious, relaxed vibe that transported us to the white sand beaches of, well, St. Barts.

It&#;s the lightest, coolest robe we recommend. This robe has the most breathable material of any we tested. Breezy and summer-ready, it&#;s ideal for keeping you comfy in warmer temps.

It drapes well and doesn&#;t cling. The Rough Linen robe has a relaxed, flattering shape&#;with ample material for wrapping around the body&#;that suits many different frames. There&#;s no inside tie, but we didn&#;t have any issues with the robe slipping open; the fabric is structured enough that it stayed securely closed using only the single wide belt.

The sleeves hit just at the wrist and are easy to cuff, if desired. The mid-calf length feels breezy and stylish.

If you dig the look and feel of linen, it&#;s fantastic. This robe is made from the softest linen we&#;ve tested. It feels light and lived-in but not flimsy&#;and it mellows over time. That said, it&#;s still got some texture to it, which isn&#;t for everyone. And like all linen, it wrinkles. (You&#;ll need to iron or steam the Rough Linen robe after laundering if you want it crisp and polished; we were successful, but it took a bit of effort.)

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • All linen wrinkles and feels slightly coarse, though this linen is softer than most. If you prefer smoother fabrics, our other picks will work better for you.
  • We wish this robe came in more extended sizes.

Sizes: unisex S to XL

Material: 100% linen

Other robes worth considering

Unisex

If you want a delightful (if wacky) wearable duvet: The Casper Snoozewear Blanket Robe (S to L) is basically a knee-length duvet with armholes: It has a crisp cotton shell and channels stuffed with a puffy poly fill. It&#;s unquestionably warm and enveloping, but it&#;s too bulky and impractical for most daily activities&#;with the exception of lounging or watching TV, in which case it&#;s pretty ideal&#;and its batwing sleeves and single button closure don&#;t help. Three separate Blanket Robe test samples arrived with an unpleasantly musty smell; a hot-water laundry cycle and a trip through the dryer resolved it.

If you want a gauzy cotton robe: The knee-length Riley Four Layer Robe (XS to XL) is made from four layers of breezy, fantastically soft combed cotton. The fabric is thicker than jersey but lighter than waffle&#;just right for milder temperatures. The sleeves are a bit long, though.

If you want a stylish, splurgy terry robe with a hood: For a more tasteful (and eye-poppingly expensive) take on the basic bathrobe, the Tekla Terry Hooded Bathrobe delivers. This calf-length robe has a slouchy, oversize fit&#;complete with a rather louche-looking hood&#;and comes in an appealing range of colors, including some cool striped patterns. The terry fabric feels decadently plush, but it&#;s not as absorbent as that of our Company Cotton terry pick. We bumped into a couple issues on the laundry front, though: One tester reported that her robe shrank significantly&#;getting shorter by at least 3 inches&#;when washed (in cold water) and dried (on medium heat). And another tester found terry loops unraveling on her robe after the first wash, prompting her to reach out to Tekla customer service. Following a series of frustrating exchanges, the company replaced the defective robe.

Men&#;s

If you want a classic, luxurious men&#;s silk robe (that comes only in black): The Lunya Men&#;s Washable Silk Robe (S to XXL) is a handsome calf-length robe with a classic shawl collar and a generous fit. Though it&#;s billed as a men&#;s robe, both our male and female testers liked it. (Just note there&#;s no internal tie to keep it closed, so it can slip open if it&#;s not tied securely.) The 19mm silk is buttery and soft&#;its matte feel is similar to that of our women&#;s Eberjey Inez Robe pick, but it has a bit more heft (and a slightly higher price tag). Unfortunately, the Lunya robe comes only in black, which isn&#;t everyone&#;s vibe.

Why you should trust us

I&#;m a senior staff writer covering style and accessories for Wirecutter. I&#;ve written our guides to women&#;s white T-shirts, women&#;s jeans, and cashmere sweaters, to name a few. I primarily work from home, which means I usually wear a robe to work.

For the edition of this guide:

  • I tested every one of our existing recommendations, plus 14 fresh robes.
  • A panel of five more people also tested the new contenders and provided detailed feedback.
  • I built on the reporting of this guide&#;s previous author, Wirecutter senior staff writer (and textile expert) Jackie Reeve, who researched 125 robes and tested 36 of them (with help from a five-person panel) between and .
  • Like all Wirecutter journalists, I review and test products with complete editorial independence. I&#;m never made aware of any business implications of my editorial recommendations. Read more about our editorial standards.

How we picked and tested

Wirecutter has been evaluating robes since . When we decided to revisit this guide in late , we carefully considered the lineup.

We retested our original picks to make sure they were still worth recommending. (Many are still standing.) We also took the opportunity to fill gaps, testing 14 additional styles&#;in new-to-us categories like quilted and silk robes&#;plus others that tickled our fancy. Three women (myself and two Wirecutter style editors) and three men tested the robes and provided feedback.

A good robe is a trusty companion through life&#;s daily activities, so that&#;s how we approached this testing. We wore them as we made our morning coffee, snuggled into the sofa for movie nights, and threw open our front doors to surprised FedEx employees.

Cold-weather robes have been put to the snowy driveway test, too&#;weather permitting. For the terry and waffle robes, we donned them post-shower to see how they&#;d absorb moisture, then timed how long it took for them to dry.

We laundered each robe&#;blatantly disregarding any care instructions that seemed overly fussy&#;and checked for signs of shrinkage and deterioration.

We made our picks based on the following criteria:

  • Comfort: We focused on finding the comfiest robes in the softest, most touchable materials. Where applicable, we also assessed them for qualities like breathability, absorbency, and warmth.
  • Ease of care: A great robe pampers you&#;but you shouldn&#;t have to pamper it. All of our picks are machine-washable, and all of them (except our silk picks, which air-dry quickly) will do fine in the dryer.
  • Quality construction: We examined the stitching on side seams, armholes, and bottom hems, and we considered details like pocket functionality and whether a robe&#;s belt (and/or inner tie) could keep the garment securely closed. We gave preference to robes made by companies with solid customer service policies.
  • Aesthetic appeal: A robe should look as good as it feels. We considered overall style appeal, as well as how a robe looked and draped on different body types.
  • Seasonality: We sought out robes intended for different temperatures and circumstances. Still, we preferred models that are available year-round&#;or at least return year after year.
  • Value: We tested robes ranging from around $50 to $300. In some cases (ahem, silk), quality and cost were closely correlated. In every case, we thought hard about whether each robe was worth its price.

The competition

This is not a comprehensive list of everything we tested in previous iterations of this guide, just what&#;s still available.

Waffle

One wash was enough to knock out the Boll & Branch Women&#;s Waffle Robe (emerged with distorted cuffs), the unisex Riley Hooded Waffle Robe (shrank so much it was no longer wearable), and the unisex Snow Honeycomb Bathrobe (got excessively rumpled).

The Coyuchi Unisex Organic Waffle Robe felt scratchy against the skin. The Parachute Waffle Robe wasn&#;t as plush as our Brooklinen waffle pick&#;but it is a nice choice for a hotter climate.

Terry

After laundering, there were visible snags on both the Coyuchi Unisex Cloud Loom Organic Robe and the unisex Parachute Classic Turkish Cotton Robe; the latter also shrank significantly.

Flannel, fleece

The Alexander Del Rossa Plush Fleece Robe is inexpensive, and it comes in a wide range of men&#;s and women&#;s sizes. Unfortunately, it couldn&#;t hold a candle to our Restoration Hardware plush pick when it came to softness, quality, or aesthetics.

We tried the L.L.Bean Scotch Plaid Flannel Robe (in men&#;s and women&#;s sizes) and The Vermont Country Store&#;s Portuguese Flannel Robe (in men&#;s and women&#;s sizes). The Vermont Country Store robe is toastier, but the L.L.Bean won out on construction, design, and color saturation, and for a time it was a pick in this guide. Ultimately, though, we came to the conclusion that flannel&#;though it has its defenders&#;doesn&#;t offer enough warmth, style, or comfort to justify a spot in our lineup.

Jersey

The Lands&#; End Women&#;s Supima Cotton Long Robe wasn&#;t as luxurious-feeling as our Natori Shangri-La jersey pick or the Lunya Robe in our &#;Other robes worth considering&#; section. Plus, the colors and prints go in and out of stock frequently.

Silk

Our testers didn&#;t find the knee-length Lunya Washable Silk Robe flattering. Odd design choices&#;like the thick, gathered cuffs and anorak-style integrated waist tie&#;didn&#;t help.

The Quince 100% Washable Silk Robe (women&#;s, men&#;s) wowed us with its price tag&#;$100 for the knee-grazing women&#;s robe and $120 for the slightly longer men&#;s version. But the silk itself had a powdery texture that easily picked up greasy stains and wrinkles.

Quilted

The Offhours Homecoat&#;a heavy, cotton comforter-style unisex robe&#;has a loyal following (even in the Wirecutter-verse). While it&#;s certainly warm, whimsical, and luxe, we couldn&#;t sign off on the $300 price tag nor its 5-pound weight. In comparison, our (cheaper) Skin Sierra pick is much less onerous and far more practical while still looking chic and upscale.

Cotton twill

We&#;ve seen multiple complaints about The Vermont Country Store Men&#;s Classic Stripe Seersucker Robe fitting poorly on slimmer men.

The Vermont Country Store Men&#;s True Blue Cotton Wrap Robe felt way too thin: It stuck to the body, wrinkled in the wash, and seemed prone to tearing.

We tried colorful printed robes in both the cotton twill and Indian cotton fabrics from Block Shop, a Los Angeles&#;based textile studio that produces bold, hand-block-printed designs. The cotton-twill robe felt heavy and stiff (imagine a light-blocking curtain). We preferred the much lighter Indian cotton robe, but it ultimately felt too insubstantial to merit its $160 price tag. Plus, at the time of testing, the prints we liked most were sold out.
