What are claw machines?
Claw machines are arcade games where players control a mechanical claw to try and grab prizes from a glass-enclosed box. The prizes can range from plush toys, candy, electronics, gift cards, or other items that fit inside the machine.
Claw machines are popular among people of all ages because they offer a fun and exciting challenge, as well as a chance to win something valuable. They also appeal to people’s curiosity and desire to collect items.
Why use claw machines for marketing?
Claw machines can help you achieve various marketing goals, such as:
- Attracting attention: Claw machines can draw people's attention with their bright colors, flashing lights, and catchy sounds. They can also create a buzz around your brand by offering unique and attractive prizes that people want to win.
- Increasing engagement: Claw machines can encourage people to interact with your brand by playing the game and sharing their experience on social media. They can also create a sense of loyalty and satisfaction by rewarding your customers with prizes that they value.
- Generating leads: Claw machines can help you collect customer data by asking them to enter their contact information or scan a QR code before playing. You can then use this data to follow up with them and offer them more products or services.
- Driving sales: Claw machines can help you boost sales by offering discounts, coupons, or free samples as prizes. You can also use claw machines to cross-sell or upsell your products or services by displaying them inside the machine or near the game area.
How to choose the right claw machine for your marketing campaign?
There are many types of claw machines available in the market, but not all of them are suitable for your marketing campaign. Consider the following factors before choosing the right claw machine for your business:
- Your target audience: Understand who your potential customers are and what they like. For example, if you are targeting children, you might want to choose a claw machine with colorful and cute prizes, such as plush toys or candy. For adults, opt for more sophisticated and valuable prizes like electronics or gift cards.
- Your budget: Determine how much you can afford to spend on renting or buying a claw machine, as well as on stocking it with prizes. Also consider maintenance and operation costs, such as electricity, repairs, and staff.
- Your space: Assess how much space you have available for setting up a claw machine in your store, event venue, or other location. Also consider the safety and accessibility of the machine for your customers and staff.
- Your theme: Align the claw machine with your marketing message and strategy. For example, for a new product launch, choose a claw machine that showcases your product features and benefits. For raising awareness for a social cause, select a machine that supports your cause and mission.

Arduino Claw Machine - Instructables
Let me first say there are many ways to build this claw machine. I found that making a hybrid CNC/3D printer machine simplifies the mechanical aspects, as these parts are readily available, cheap, and modular. You could go with the traditional claw machine using DC motors for the gantry, which simplifies the power electronics (H bridge ICs) and code, but complicates the drive mechanics. Most claw machines have worm gears that drive the gantry, providing speed reduction and required torque. I prefer a 'bolt-on' approach rather than a custom-fabricated mini version for the gantry. I found stepper motors are easy to mount, have a good range of speed, and provide more torque than needed, making this the chosen route.
Cost to build:
The Bill of Materials (BoM) for this machine's documented version totals $470. The crossed-out items in the BoM reflect the reduced cost version, removing all Aluminum extrusion (replaced by a wood frame) and some other non-essentials like the LCD and mechanical coin acceptor, reducing the cost to about $210.
I did not expect this machine to cost so much. On the bright side, with a quarter slot, it can pay for itself over time and even become profitable. So let's call this build an 'investment'.
Where to buy parts:
eBay. If you can wait for things to ship from China, you can't beat those eBay prices.
Why did you use certain parts?
I got the steppers from a USA eBay seller who sells refurbished steppers (about $8 per stepper), and I must say the steppers are awesome. Each motor has a Molex connector at the base, making build/disassembly simple. The Arduino Mega is an off-brand from DealExtreme (works just fine), and the Al extrusion came from Misumi USA (cheaper than the 80/20 brand). The cost is high as I buy more than needed and prepare for mistakes (I've killed a few ULN2803's and TIP120's). It might be better to build this from DC motors, but I went with Nema 17 steppers for two main reasons: standard mounting hole pattern and usefulness in future projects. This project is easier to replicate (think kit form) with standard parts – Nema Steppers fit this due to the 3D printer market. All the belts, pulleys, and wheels are readily available 3D printer parts. I also saved some money by making my own claw and brackets for the XYZ gantry, though designing and building the claw was challenging but worthwhile. Other claw options I tried were disappointing in quality. Building my gantry was cheaper and simpler, as relying on dimensioned parts from around the web led to frustration due to fit issues. Sticking to 5mm bore parts, common in DIY 3D printing, has simplified things as they are widely available on eBay for cheap.
TL;DR: Cost = $470 using Al extrusion for the frame, built from 3D printer parts and custom designs from scratch. Total cost is ~$210 if the frame is built from wood.
