Gadgets of tomorrow - The Tribune

Vaibhav Sharma

CES is the behemoth of tradeshows. Just as Las Vegas starts to recover from the hundreds of thousands of people who throng the city for New Year&#;s, thousands more pour in every year in early January for tech&#;s biggest extravaganza, the Consumer Electronics Show. This year, just under 4,000 exhibitors took over 2.6 million square feet of hotel and convention centre floorspace to showcase everything from huge futuristic cars to tiny chips that will power tomorrow&#;s gadgets. There were self-driving cars, drones, collapsible electric scooters, home entertainment peripherals, different forms of &#;AI&#; powered gadgets and TVs so thin you could cut your finger from the edges &#; the list is practically endless. Here are a few interesting offerings that caught our eye:

Faraday Future FF91

Everyone from Mercedes to Tesla is working on self-driving electric cars. So, this definitely isn&#;t new. However, one company that did manage to capture everyone&#;s attention with its FF91 was Faraday Future. Last year, it showed FFZERO1, a non-functional dream car; but this year belonged to the super-charged FF91 that runs on a 130kWh battery and delivers slightly over 600 km between charges. Coupled with a zero-to-60 time of just 2.39 seconds, and a futuristic design &#; you have a car that defines innovation. Sadly, there is no guarantee that the car will actually be a reality as the company is having major cash flow problems. That said, it is taking pre-orders with a $ refundable deposit and an estimated shipping date of . There is no final price yet.

LG Signature W OLED

After smartphones, it&#;s time for TV&#;s to grow thinner every year. This is largely thanks to Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) technology that can produce excellent pictures on incredibly thin panels. Both LG and Samsung are at the forefront of this tech, but it is LG that is pushing the limits of what OLED can accomplish with the Signature W series. The bezels around the display are history and so is the body. All you have is a 2.5 mm thick rectangle that hangs on the wall like a picture. Connected by a single ribbon cable, the soundbar handles all the processing and the I/O requirements. The offering comes with both Dolby Atmos audio and Dolby Vision; it also supports HDR-10 video capabilities. Expect an astronomical price tag when it hits stores.

Xiaomi, on the opposite end of the spectrum, deserves a mention for its modular approach to TVs. The 65&#; variant of the Mi TV 4 features a 4K standalone display and a separate Mi TV Bar. This unit houses the motherboard along with two speakers, a subwoofer and is paired with two wireless satellite speakers. In the future, you could just swap the processing unit in the TV Bar to upgrade without making the display redundant. This will launch next month for an estimated price of under US$2,000 for the 65-inch variant and the Dolby Atmos speaker system. Its $500 less without the Dolby goodness.

Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed

If you want to learn more, please visit our website NOKIA FPKA China.

An unusual, but very welcome gadget is Sleep Number&#;s 360 Smart Bed. The bed adapts to your body in real time, while also letting you manually program it to your liking. The technology inside it responds to your nocturnal turns and twists, adjusting mattress firmness automatically. But one even more welcome feature, especially useful in this weather, is a foot warmer that turns on automatically at your usual bed time. For married folks, it offers some relief from snores. The bed will automatically lift your partner&#;s head to improve air flow and dampen the noise. It is controllable via an app and also supports Nest and IFTTT integrations.

Qualcomm&#;s Snapdragon 835

If you own an Android , it is more than likely that it is powered by Qualcomm&#;s Snapdragon lineup. At the CES , the company showed off its latest and greatest. The 835 is built on an advanced 10-nanometer design, making its extremely tiny. In fact, it is 35 per cent smaller and uses 25 per cent less power than previous designs, and is engineered to deliver exceptionally long battery life, life-like VR and AR experiences, cutting-edge camera capabilities and Gigabit Class download speeds.

It houses the new Snapdragon X16 LTE modem that is designed to deliver peak download speeds up to 1 gigabit per second &#; 10X as fast as first-generation 4G LTE, along with multi-gigabit 802.11ad and integrated 2x2 11ac MU-MIMO Wi-Fi giving you internet access at fibre optic speeds, wirelessly. This is incredible because its tiny size means that it can be put inside not just smartphones and tablets, but VR headsets and other 5G devices. Another interesting metric is its Quick Charge 4.0 support that can provide &#;five hours of use from just five minutes of charging.&#;

Dell XPS 13 2-in-1

The death of the laptop has been greatly exaggerated and this was clear from the wide range of Windows 10 offerings from the likes of Lenovo, Asus and Dell. The Windows 10 laptop is finally coming into its own and giving Apple a run for its money.

The pick of the lot was the new XPS 13 2-in-1, which, as the name suggests, is a convertible designed to rival some of the devices in Lenovo's Yoga range and Asus&#;s Zenbook series. By going almost bezel-less, it packs a 13&#; display in a body that competitors only manage to fit smaller displays in. It features a touch screen and comes in Full HD and QHD models. The foldable hinge allows you to use it in a variety of positions, and it&#;s thin enough to be used as tablet. It'll come packing the latest Intel Kaby Lake architecture (Core i5 or Core i7) and offer two USB-C ports. Starts at $999.99 before taxes.

Nokia 6

The first Nokia branded smartphone in years wasn&#;t released at CES, but elsewhere in the same week. The sheer excitement with which it was greeted across the world was only stemmed by the disappointment of it being a China exclusive. HMD Global&#;s first smartphone is a mid-range Android machined out of aluminum, featuring a 2.5D Gorilla Glass screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage. It runs Android Nougat out of the box and features a 16MP rear camera and an 8MP front-facing camera. The price is around the $250 mark. But there is much to cheer about as the company has teased more Nokia launches at MWC in February .
