AC vs DC stick welding differences
It depends a lot on what rod you use. Some rods work on DC only. Some work better on DC.
For general repairs on rusty or oily mild steel, rod is preferred and works well on AC. It is nicknamed "Farmer Rod" for a reason.
For high quality welds on mild steel or low alloy steel, is preferred. It works best on DC, but is available (called AC) in a version that works on AC. I remember (back when I had an AC-only machine) that it was more expensive than regular .
Fast-fill rods ("Mud Rod") is a low-penetration rod that makes a smooth and pretty weld deposit on flat surfaces/joints. It doesn't work in vertical or overhead positions. It is numbered . Some is rated for AC use, and has a good reputation, given it's limitations. The weld deposit is similar to MIG with flux-core wire.
Given how easy it is to find a used stick welder with DC capability, it is worth the wait. It comes in handy to have both options if you need to run a more exotic rod. Used stick welders don't have the popularity of MIG machines, and the prices are often very low.
