What is PET ?

“Polyethylene Terephthalate”, known as PET is the most common thermoplastic polymer resin of the POLYESTER family and is used as a fibre for clothing, industrial textiles, containers for liquids and foods, in thermoforming for manufacturing and in combination with glass fibre for engineering resins.

Possibly the single most common use that we all see on a day to day basis is its use as a container for liquids, particularly water and soft drinks.

“Is there a problem with plastic?

Your computer and TV contain it. Your cleaning products and food packaging do too. Plastic.

Most of it is made from non-renewable fossil fuels. Fracking company Ineos

uses shale gas to manufacture plastic milk bottles.

Where does all this plastic go? Most plastic isn’t recycled. A lot of it ends up in landfill where it can reportedly take up to 1,000 years  to decompose.

The rest is dropped as litter, and usually ends up in our waterways. In fact a truck load of plastic a minute ends up in our oceans. By 2050 it’s estimated there will be more plastic than fish in the sea

Fish and other sea life can get tangled in plastic products or mistake them for food .”

The advantages of PET bottle recycling

  1. 10 plastic bottles equate to around 400grammes of polyester fibre

2. 1 ton of plastic bottles recycled saves 3.8 barrels of oil

3. 1 million plastic bottles saves around 250 barrels of oil

4. 1 million plastic bottles recycled eliminates 180 metric tons of CO2 emissions from being released into the atmosphere

5. 10% of all oil consumed is used to make plastics

6. Recycling plastic bottles takes 8timres less energy than to produce an equivalent amount of new bottles

7. In America alone the supply of plastic bottles that are consumed each year requires 47 million barrels of oil and releases 450 million kilos of CO2 into the atmosphere

Its pretty compelling stuff !

How does the recycling work?

It all starts when you toss a PET bottle into a recycling bin.

At the recycling factory the bottles are sorted by their chemical make-up and baled together.

Some bottles could be made from HDPE like household and kitchenware, carrier bags & food wrapping.

For our example we are concentrating on only those items manufactured from PET which include water bottles, soft & fizzy drinks bottles, pots, tubs, oven ready trays and sometimes jam jars.

Once compressed into large bales the bottles are transferred to a PET reclaiming facility.

The bottles are then thoroughly cleaned, their caps and all labelling is removed.

The clean bottle’s are now fed into a grinder where they are ground down into flakes.

The flakes are tossed in hot air which gives them a hard outer coating, and then dried to remove any remaining moisture.

From here the flakes are melted through hot pipes and the resulting hot liquid is forced through a machine die containing micro-holes.

This forms extremely fine filaments which cure (harden) and these are then fed to a machine called a spinneret that entangles the filaments , generally with air pressure. This creates a yarn which can then be spooled and stretched to realign the molecules and give the product strength and flexibility.

How the Felt is made

The resultant recycled PET fibre is blended with virgin polyester fibre at various concentrates with a min of 60% recycled PET being the norm.

This pre-felt is then layered up and fed through heated rollers to combine the fibres together.

This means that a certain percentage of the fibre in the matrix will contain low melt polyester which binds the product together to form a rigid, stable structure.

A serious of heated platens then compress the mat to form a sheet, which is trimmed to size.

Current PET felt manufacturing technology is yet to advance to using 100% recycled product.

100% of the felt sheet can be recycled again by shredding, grinding, melting and extruding, although the more times this is done the less usable product is recovered due to degradation.
