Understanding The Various Types of Centrifugal Pump Casings

By Allan Budris

The type of casing significantly influences the reliability of the pump, defined as the average duration between repairs, and slightly affects efficiency when the flow rates deviate from the best efficiency point (BEP). While optimal operation at the BEP is desirable for many pump applications, it is often not realized due to:

  • Inaccurate identification of the friction head in the existing pump system during the purchasing process
  • The inclusion of excessive safety factors in pump selection to account for future wear
  • Degradation of the pump over time
  • Changes or increases in system friction head as time progresses
  • Fluctuations in static and friction head during normal operations

Three primary types of casings are prevalent in centrifugal pumps: single volute, double volute, and vaned diffuser. Among these, single volute is the most commonly used for low- to medium-flow, single-stage pumps, while double volutes are typically utilized for larger single-stage pumps that handle non-solid liquids, and vaned diffusers are mostly found in multistage pumps.

Each casing type offers distinct benefits and drawbacks related to bearing and shaft seal longevity, pump efficiency, and production costs. Although users may not always have a choice in casing selection, certain applications may present options among vendors, making it essential for users to understand the implications of these casing choices.

Single Volute Casing Insights

Single volute pumps have been utilized for many years. Excluding vertical turbine-type pumps, most single-stage pumps manufactured in the U.S. are of the single volute design. A key advantage of single volute casings is their manufacturing simplicity: they're easier to cast and thus more economical due to the open areas around the impeller's periphery. When operating close to the BEP, single volute casings tend to outperform double volute casings in terms of efficiency. Additionally, the larger throat areas in these casings can accommodate more significant solids present in wastewater.

The design of the volute scroll promotes constant velocity at the ideal efficiency flow rate, resulting in uniform static pressure across the impeller's periphery, but this is only true at the BEP. Unfortunately, this pressure balance can be disrupted when the pump operates below or above the BEP. The resulting uneven pressure distribution, as illustrated when flow is absent, introduces increased radial loads on the rotor, which may lead to pump shaft deflection and greater wear on seals and bearings. In severe cases, excessive fatigue can even cause shaft failures.
