SPC Flooring, strong and fragile...

Installers beware! SPC flooring is simultaneously strong, fragile, and not as forgiving as LVT or laminate when installing.

While SPC flooring comes with durability benefits, it also presents challenges that installers should consider when planning an installation.

Extra care when engaging the locking joint, understanding its weaknesses, and knowing how to tap it together is crucial. This can make the difference between a satisfied client and another claim.

The tell-tale ski jump at the butt end of multiple installed boards indicates broken joints, usually associated with incorrect handling or excessive mallet impact. SPC joints are thin and brittle. If installed without the necessary care — for instance, using a tapping block to spread the load of mallet impacts and correct disengagement of planks — micro-fracturing of the end joint can easily occur. Once this happens, the visual result may be immediate or take months to develop as the fracture worsens with use.

Therefore, installers switching between LVT or laminate and SPC installation should take time to understand the locking joint. Adjust installation techniques and always review manufacturer installation guidelines to avoid problems.

Hi, I want to ask for opinions about SPC flooring. Is it recommended? What is the normal thickness of SPC should I go for? The contractor recommends 3.7mm with a 1mm underlay.

Strengths:

i. Water resistant

ii. Compared to laminate flooring - Water resistant

iii. Compared to luxury vinyl plank (e.g., Allure Flooring) - Allure flooring is better in terms of water resistance as vinyl is waterproof

iv. Dent-resistant compared to wood as SPC is a stone plastic composite

v. Termite-proof (stone and plastic)

Weaknesses:

i. The Malaysian market has a lot of cheap low-quality 4mm SPC with no attached underlayment. (Made in China, e.g., RM4-6 per sqft)

ii. Feels quite hard compared to wood. It has almost the same hardness as ceramic tiles.

How to identify low quality:

i. Not virgin material (can Google)

ii. SPC composition (stone more than plastic), very stiff, if bent then will break; higher quality ones are more flexible

iii. Body thickness: 4mm is the thinnest (I would avoid 3.7mm at all costs). At least 5mm is recommended.

iv. Wear layer thickness: 0.3mm is the thinnest; 0.5mm is recommended.

v. Lack of UV layer (e.g., near window or door, color fades easily)

vi. Click and lock system can break easily if bent with a finger.

vii. Wood pattern lacks variety and repeats often.

As for underlay (PE foam), with a 4mm body, they won't use >1mm thickness underlay because the body is thin, and any uneven surface will cause clicks to break easily. With 5mm, it's possible to use a 2mm thickness underlay. For better quality, EVA foam is recommended.

Brands in Malaysia:

i. China SPC with no brand/Protex (I would avoid these; most likely your contractor is supplying you this to save costs)

ii. Teraflor/Genflor (Malaysian brand, I think)

iii. Shaw Contract (US Brand)

iv. Aqua SPC

I would advise you to Google and visit SPC suppliers nearby, touch and feel the SPC samples, and then make a decision.
