Venus XII as 6-string plus newbie 12-string question

Post by cestlamort » Mon Mar 03, 7:40 am

You will get efficient and thoughtful service from NAILI.

Many people remove half the strings from their Rickenbacker 12 strings and play as normal guitars (same nut, truss rod adjustments).

The rickresource.com forum folks swear by Thomastik Infeld flat wounds as the best strings ever (now around $40/set), but they aren't cheap. I've used D'addario 12 string sets. There will be some drift with any guitar, especially as the strings stretch and adjust. I briefly had a venus XII (then sold to Pacafeliz too quickly when I tracked down an old EKO 12) but I don't remember if I also had the same tuning issues.

I would suggest trying to stay in 12 string land for a while. It is a cool alternate universe to normal electric guitars, prompting you to play differently and play different things. As you've discovered, 12 string electrics are a special thing and not really a 100% of the time guitar (unless you're Roger McGuinn, Marty Willson-Piper, Chapterhouse, Mahogany, etc).

It is also completely worthwhile to get a compressor. They really help in making the 12 string sound come into focus. The Janglebox sounds pretty much perfect and is the easiest to use (again, not cheap), but I also rediscovered an old Ibanez CP-10 and that gets really close for less. (I think it's the same as the CP-9, etc). (You could also pick up one of the UE floor pedals for less than $200 for some great sounds, depending on whether you'd want overdrive (UE300) or delay (UE305). Sorry for the tangent). People also like the dynacomp.

My advice: stick it out for a bit and find out where it takes you. And then maybe remove the octave strings.
