Coupon (PWB)

A coupon or test coupon is a type of printed circuit board (PCB) used specifically to assess the quality of a printed wiring board (PWB) fabrication process. These test coupons are created on the same panel as the PWBs, usually along the periphery. The objective of these coupons is to verify the accuracy of layer alignment, electrical connectivity, and to provide cross-sectional views to scrutinize the internal structures. Custom designs can be prepared for specific PWBs, or you may choose from existing vendor libraries for standard configurations.

Overview

A coupon includes traces and vias with identical dimensions and structures as those on the main PWB. It is common practice to place these coupons on the edges of a panel designed to produce multiple PWBs. This method ensures the consistency of plating, etching, and lamination processes across the entire panel. Using coupons for testing is a crucial step in reliably monitoring the quality and consistency of fabrication processes.

  • To determine static or dynamic material properties of composites, ceramics, or metals
  • To ascertain static or dynamic behavior of joints
  • To evaluate fracture toughness properties
  • To identify crack initiation and crack growth
  • To certify your material

Do you need all this in an ambient environment, or do you require low (-55°C), cryogenic temperatures (-180°C), or elevated (80°C) or really hot (1250°C) conditions? Does the air need to be dry, humid, corrosive, or even worse? Does your article need to be saturated with water or another liquid?
