As the industry transitions into a multi-mode era, ZTE has committed itself to delivering comprehensive network solutions that pave the way for next-generation networks tailored for operators. They have introduced an innovative Software-Defined Radio (SDR) unified platform that seamlessly supports various modes and frequency bands. This groundbreaking SDR foundation has led to the development of several base stations, catering to specific operational environments such as Indoor Macros, Outdoor Macros, Distributed setups, Outdoor Micros, and Mini Base Transceiver Stations (BTS). The objective of these SDR-centric base stations is to create an interconnected network that guarantees uninterrupted service for operators. By utilizing GSM, UMTS, or hybrid models, operators can realize significant reductions in both capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operational expenses (OPEX); this is achieved through the implementation of a Uni-Radio Access Network, which supersedes traditional stand-alone GSM and UMTS networks.
The ZXSDR BSA serves as an outdoor macro BTS that offers an integrated solution encompassing power supply, battery, and transmission components. It is designed with GSM/UMTS dual-mode capabilities, making it a future-ready option that ensures a smooth transition to enhanced EDGE, HSPA+, and LTE technologies. Figure 1-1 depicts the physical layout of the BSA. The subsequent sections will delve deeper into the specifics of the ZXSDR BSA (referred to as BSA).
Product Architecture
The BSA features a standardized 19-inch rack structure comprising an outdoor baseband cabinet BCA, an outdoor radio cabinet RCA, and a battery cabinet PCA. The general configuration measurements for the BSA are mm *600mm * 600mm (H*W*D), achieving a total height inclusive of a 200mm bottom base and 16mm top cover. The outdoor baseband cabinet, also designated as the site support cabinet, hosts the power distribution shelf, fan assembly, baseband unit shelf, ventilation shelf, and additional capacity for transmission or auxiliary devices. The outdoor RF cabinets are specifically designed to accommodate radio units, supporting up to 6 Radio Signal Units (RSUs). The battery cabinet can house up to 2 x 150AH batteries. The complete assembly of the BSA, consisting of the BCA, RCA, and PCA, is illustrated in the following figure. A single BSA rack can support a maximum of 60 GSM TRXs or 30 UMTS channels.
Physical Architecture of BSA
The BSA is primarily divided into two key segments: the baseband unit and the radio unit, as depicted in the following illustration.
Figure 2-2 outlines the hardware framework of the BSA.
Site Support Cabinet BCA
The BCA is composed of five main components: the baseband unit, power supply system, power distribution module, heat exchange system, and designated space for transmission or supplementary equipment. The heat exchange system is comprehensive, featuring a fan and a ventilation assembly, alongside a heat exchanger positioned within the cabinet door. The hardware architecture for the BCA is displayed in the following figure.
Figure 2-3 illustrates the Site Support Cabinet BCA (AC Power Supply). If utilizing a DC power supply, the AC/DC power system (5U) must be replaced with a 2U DC power distribution unit as indicated in Figure 2-4.

AC/DC Power System
The BCA's power system includes four 30A AC/DC rectifiers, resulting in a total height of 5U. The specific configuration can be influenced by load requirements and the capacity of backup batteries.
Outdoor Radio Cabinet RCA
The RCA is comprised of six RF modules and a fan control mechanism. Its physical configuration is represented in the subsequent figure, Figure 2-16, showcasing the Outdoor Radio Cabinet RCA.
Also Indoor Radio Cabinet RCA
In this iteration, the RCA supports three RF modules and accommodates four battery units alongside a fan control subsystem. The physical architecture is depicted in the accompanying figure. The RCA structure is bifurcated into left and right sections, allowing for the installation of three RSUs in the right section and housing four 150AH batteries in the left section, details of which can be referenced in subsection 2.2.2.
Battery Cabinet PCA
This PCA serves as an outdoor battery cabinet that operates in conjunction with the BCA and RCA. The structure of the PCA, illustrated in the following figure, consists of eight batteries, with a cumulative capacity of two 150AH units.
